Are there those who achieve greatness while being immune to difficulty? Or, are greatness and struggle inextricably linked?
Multiple renowned foundries insisted The FORGOTTEN sculpture would be impossible to cast in bronze. Countless stories core to the human experience are expressed: relentless perseverance, heartache, hope and fear, overcoming, and determination. Everything that has built up and led to this point has, at times, held back; it's pushed forward, tied down, yet there's still a fight to break free.
The ache of feeling forgotten permeated my adventure along with the idea of being “too much” and “not enough”. However, hope was (and is) always present, cast like the metal in the piece; it won't let go as it both supports and strangles like wrapping roots. Tears of happiness, devastation, accompanying laughter and cathartic release all feed the roots that support and restrain.
Painful words become valued and never allow for settling or mediocrity. Perfectionism which started with hurt enables the extraordinary. Perseverance leads to breakthrough which quitting never could. Brokenness can heal and beauty can come from pain. Like life, it's beautiful and ugly, orderly and messy all at once.
Ultimately, these things form character and inspire art which is not otherwise possible.
