Are there great artists that have been immune to struggle? Seeking adventure yet never fathoming how hard life would be; perhaps this is part of any great story.
Multiple renowned foundries insisted The FORGOTTEN sculpture would be impossible to cast in bronze. Countless stories core to the human experience are expressed: relentless perseverance, heartache and struggle, hope and fear, overcoming, and barely hanging on. Everything that has built up and led to this point has, at times, held back; it's pushed forward, tied down, yet there's still a fight to break free.
The ache of feeling forgotten permeates adventure along with the awareness of being “too much” and “not enough”. Hope is always present, cast like the metal in the piece, it won't let go as it strangles like wrapping roots. Tears of happiness, devastation, accompanying laughter and cathartic release all feed the roots that support and also restrain.
Painful words become valued, as they play on repeat year after year, and never allow for settling. Perfectionism comes from hurt and enables the extraordinary. Perseverance beyond what's considered “healthy” leads to breakthrough quitting never could. Brokenness can heal and beauty can come from pain. Like life, it's beautiful and ugly, orderly and messy all at once.
Ultimately, these things form character and fuel art in a unique and intriguing manner not otherwise possible.
